Two PGA TOUR Championships

The Nissan Open '02
After battling back and forth, the tournament came down to the final hole with Len and Scott McCarron tied at 15 under par. Len pulled it out with a dramatic, one stroke victory for his first ever Tour win in over 220 events. It was the culmination of a lifetime of hard work and determination.

The FedEx St. Jude Classic '02
In the FedEx ’02, Len found himself seven strokes back from the leader. Undeterred, Len fought back and took the lead on the 17th hole on the final day. Showing his mettle, Len shot a blistering final round, seven under 64 to win by one stroke over Tim Petrovic. With that win, Len became the second player that year to have multiple wins, second only to Tiger Woods.

The Masters Story

The final round of the 2003 Masters, five strokes back of leader, Len rose to the occasion. He posted the best round of the tournament, a 7 under 65, to force a playoff with Mike Weir. Although Weir won the playoff, Len’s play, perseverance, and outward show of emotion connected with all who watched that day. A reporter said it best: “Those tears were about how powerful it is to believe in yourself and to dream. About putting yourself in a position to do something incredible. God bless Len Mattiace for the honesty of his emotions.” –– Melanie Hauser, GolfWeb.

The 17th at Sawgrass

The Players 1998. Len was the local guy with the crowd behind. His ailing mother was in the gallery watching from a wheelchair. With stellar play, Len held a one stroke lead on Sunday. Then came the notorious 17th.

His tee shot went over the flag and into the water. Third in the bunker. His sand shot over the green and into the water again. His quintuple bogey left him suddenly out of contention. He did birdie 18-one of the hardest holes on the PGA TOUR. If it ended there, maybe it would be a sad story. But for Len, it just made him more determined. Through it all, Len never lost perspective on the game-and life. Len was glad his Mom was able to watch him play that day as sick as she was. She passed away only three months later... Another top ten in the toughest field in golf in 2000.
